Ticks are animals from the class of arachnids, which are parasites of many vertebrates, including humans.

The active season for ticks usually lasts from April to October. The activity begins when the average daily soil temperature reaches 5-7 degrees Celsius. The number of individuals depends on weather conditions, primarily on humidity: the higher the humidity, the more ticks.

From the moment of their birth, ticks feed on the blood of animals – rodents and other mammals. The mite feeds by inserting a tubular mouth into the host’s skin. Tick ​​saliva acts as a mild local anesthetic so that bites can go unnoticed for a long time.

Most tick species live for a two to a three-year life cycle that goes through four different life stages: egg, larva, nymph – (baby tick) – adult. Even in the larval stage, mites must feed on blood to survive.

Although ticks cannot fly or jump, they can detect a potential host by smell, body heat, moisture, or vibration. When a tick bites you, it can secrete saliva, which has anesthetic properties, so it does not feel the bite. Unfortunately, this saliva can also contain any pathogen that infects the tick and is then passed on to you.

If there is an infection in the host’s blood, the tick will swallow the pathogens with food. When it feeds on the blood of the next host, it can transmit these pathogens through saliva.

If a tick has bitten you, you can do the following:

  • Emergency prophylaxis – examination by a doctor who prescribes a five-day course of antibiotics and subsequent monitoring with tests. Prevention must be started no later than 72 hours after the bite.

Tick-borne encephalitis is a viral disease that affects the central nervous system. Symptoms are similar to flu – fever, headache, and muscle pain. Usually, signs do not appear immediately, but 7-10 days after the bite.

The severe form of the disease is accompanied by high fever (39-40 degrees), nausea, tremors of the limbs, and impaired coordination. Those who have been ill for a long time have increased fatigue. The course of the disease depends on age: the older the patient is, the more difficult the disease is.

There is no cure for tick-borne encephalitis. Therapy is based on alleviating the symptoms of the disease. A person who has had tick-borne encephalitis develops lifelong immunity.

The best prevention of tick-borne encephalitis is timely vaccination. It is necessary to start vaccinating before starting the season (at least 2 weeks) of tick activity.

If it was possible to remove the tick on its own, it must be taken to the laboratory to analyze encephalitis. In case of a positive result, the patients are shown the administration of anti-tick immunoglobulin but no later than 96 hours from the moment of the bite.

Not all ticks are carriers of dangerous diseases, but you should not take them lightly either, and preventive measures are much more effective than treating the consequences. Be careful, inspect your body and clothing after jogging, and see a doctor at the first sign of a deterioration in health.
