It is getting colder outside the window, and those who decided to continue jogging in the cool late autumn and winter, it’s time to think about the appropriate equipment. In our article on how to dress for a run this time of year, we barely paid attention to hats – now we are fixing this mistake.
Warming is one of the basic principles of cold weather training. And the right outfit will not only help you stay warm (= keep your health), but also make your workout more comfortable.
The manufacturability of clothing is also important here: a sports headgear made of synthetic fabrics helps maintain thermoregulation, resists rain or snow better, and dries faster. High-quality head accessories have one more nice property – they are practically indestructible and will serve you for many years.
We will now look at the main types of headgear, each rated on a scale of one to seven, depending on the ability to keep warm.
Very handy piece made of polyester: easily transforms into a headband, hat, scarf or balaclava from 1-2 layers of fabric. It practically does not take up space: it can be tucked into the pocket of tights, windbreakers, in a running belt or bag, or screwed onto your hand. And the buff weighs practically nothing. A definite must have for any runner.
Over time, you will have a few of them – they often come as a bonus in starter packs on races, especially on trail ones. Can be worn up to minus 2 degrees.
A little life hack: if you go for a run in the offseason, always take a second buff with you for a run. If the weather changes dramatically, you can warm up a little more or cover your head / face / neck from precipitation or wind.
Pros: versatility, a huge number of colors, suitable for any season.
Minuses: blown out, gets wet, not suitable for very low temperatures.

Lightweight running beanie
Also a light version, but the head is already completely closed, and the polyester is denser. For a light frost, 1-3 degrees is enough for most. May contain special openings for glasses, headphones or tail.
Pros: Greater protection, clever solutions for the runner, as a rule, there is a reflective logo or special stripes, also suitable for spring and autumn.
Minuses: still not warm enough, it will get wet during prolonged training in heavy rainfall.

Consider the most common options for the cold season: thick fleece or fleece + windstopper. One of the most favorite hats for girls.
Fleece – lighter, with additional fabric – warmer and more protected. Can be anatomically shaped to cover the ears. We recommend wearing it up to minus 5 degrees.
Pros: “Krasiiiiivoo”, warmer, ears are reliably protected.
Minuses: the head is not completely closed, not very suitable for running in the rain and sleet.
3 and 4 out of 7, respectively.
The same universal scarf, but with a thick fleece layer. Various transformation options will provide reliable protection (head / ears / neck). Anywhere up to minus 10 can be worn.
There is a non-transformable version made of a dense layer of polartec fabric with a drawstring. It protects your neck in extremely cold temperatures and for jogging anywhere in the Arctic Circle. Although, everything is individual, of course.
Pros: again, brightness and versatility.
Minuses: strong gusts of wind or a downpour still “break through” it.

Hat – “comforter”
It is anatomically shaped, so everything you need is securely closed, inside is fleece, outside is a thick windstopper. We recommend wearing it up to minus 12 degrees.
If you don’t find it in a running store, it doesn’t matter, go to the store that sells accessories for skiers and snowboarders. It is thanks to them that she appeared in our arsenal.
Pros: high-quality protection, often manufacturers apply reflective elements.
Minuses: can be hot if it’s warm enough outside.

When it’s more than 12 degrees outside. A good hat is made of several layers of synthetics and merino wool + inside there is a special strip of fleece that is not blown through. An accessory that you will definitely rarely use, unless you live in the appropriate climatic zone.

A means of maximum protection. Covers everything from neck to crown. Suitable for those who do not like to breathe frosty air.
The design depends on the manufacturer, the most reliable consists of several layers (fleece + windstopper) – this is a barrier up to minus 20 degrees. There is a light version of mesh fabric, but this is more a thing for a skier, we are not considering it.

A couple more practical tips: see the weather forecast before jogging, the temperature “overboard”, what is the wind speed and humidity. Over time, you will learn how to assemble a kit precisely for certain conditions.
It is better to have several options for training hats for different weather.
Buffs cost a penny on Aliexpress, the quality is almost identical to the branded ones.
Remember that the hood of a running windbreaker or jacket provides extra protection. Layering in action.
You should also take into account your individual characteristics – someone even in the cold “rushes” without a hat (hot runner), and someone does not bother at all what is on his head. Everything, again, is individual.
